You Are The Product

Image
There is something nefarious that we all know about but collectively seem to forget about. We are the product, on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, and even LinkedIn, we are the product. Each of these social media platforms, however professional they proclaim themselves to be, sells us to their advertisers. With LinkedIn they just also sell us to companies, “Hey we have X-million users looking for jobs.” What’s even worse is that it seems sites like Pnet, SEEK, 3SMedia, and other job sites have started treating us the exact same way. Job seekers are no longer desperate people who need to find a job, and what’s worse is that as things have progressed, I now know that other millennials my age are also struggling. Have you heard of ghost jobs? These are jobs that perfectly functioning companies post across job sites to make it look like they are always growing. This is probably the most insane and depressing thing I have learned in 2024, so far. This information comes from...

Social Media, Gurus to Truths

Image
Have you ever come across a social media post that promises to teach you something that you’ve always wanted to achieve? Those ads that say “Get 10,000 views before the end of this month!” or “This is how I became truly independent, buy my course now and you too can become fully self-sufficient!”. If you have, then you know exactly what I mean when you read the title. Or worse, you probably bought one of these courses only to never truly achieve what they promised. The truth is, none of these really work, they are all meant to earn the creator an income in some unique way. Well, I say unique, but you already know what that way is. You. You are how they are going to be making money for the foreseeable future. You see, the grand question you need to ask when you read these course titles is, if it is so successful, why aren’t you doing it? If what they say is such a good way to grow a following, such a great way to get more views, then why are these course makers selling their cours...

Living Alone: What?

Image
Want to hear something that becomes surprisingly frustrating? Two days into this week and I have barely spoken out loud for more than a few minutes. Now, living alone is something most people don’t think about, in fact, I am sure that there are people that wish they live alone. But, as the days become weeks, the weeks become months, and now the months have become years, you get over it. To be honest, living alone becomes a frustration, a thing that bothers you on top of all the hundreds of other things that frustrate you in daily life. Take for example simple household chores. I have tried having this conversation, with family and friends, and they never quite seem to understand. See, if I talk to a mom in a family they always go “Well yeah! I do all the dishes, wash the floors, make the food! No one ever thanks me for it!” Ironically, if I talk to the dads, they start waxing poetic about their garden work, the house maintenance, and everything else. When I tell either of these g...

The New South African Road Menace

Image
I am back from holidays and boy oh boy was there a learning experience. Specifically, my father learned why I despise a very specific car that is everywhere on the South African roads. Now, I can hear the ever present “OH! Must be the taxies!” Dear, sweet, innocent, unaware reader, taxies are a city only problem. They are controlled and keep to where they feel safe. No, for this holiday season my parents decided to stick all of us to a vacation down by Gordon’s Bay then Sedgefield. Now, being a family of seven people altogether, this meant we were driving down. Once you go beyond Kroonvaal, the humble, insane, rusted up, Taxi, is not an issue. No, instead you will find that there are other, much more insane, much faster beasts roaming the N1, N2, and N12 highways. In fact, I would say that these beasts are unable to do what they do in Gauteng because there are some rich bastards here with sports cars that laugh in their arrogant faces. Okay, so who is this monster I am t...
