The true life events of the average Fairy God Mother
These short stories are written as practices in writing and all are unedited and are not proofread
The morning
broke with its usual shimmery haze, the sun was shining through slits in the
blinds, giving the entire room a magical golden glow. She awoke when the first
birdsong drifted through, caressing her ears and stirring her dreams into a
wonderful mixture of sounds.
She rolled
first to the left side, trying to avoid the songs then to the right, in a vain
attempt to avoid the sunlight. Slowly she awoke, her brain processing who she
is and where she was, there would be no sleeping in for her, work had to be
done.
A few
moments later she was out of her ensuite room, fully clothed and ready to face
whatever the day may bring. She floated down to the kitchen, where food was
already waiting for her. She grabbed the mug of coffee as it rose towards her
hand, the drink was hot, sweet, and not entirely unlike hot-chocolate.
As
breakfast was scarped down the first message pinged into existence, hovering near
her face, giving her all the information she would need.
Sighing she
swallowed the last few gulps from her mug and started reading the details
needed to actually fulfil the request.
A young
girl was being mistreated by her step family, again. She would need the usual
equipment.
The Fairy
Godmother went into her garage and started picking up equipment, strapping on
the required arsenal to properly get everything done. The trip would only take
a few hours and she would preferably not be seen, the girl was already 17 and
would be able to do everything needed on her own.
She sighed
and grabbed one of the standard wills she had made, these all read the same and
would be in human databases as needed. Magic made everything technology related
easy to handle and overcome, they didn’t believe in it so they hadn’t even
thought of protecting against it.
The garage
door started opening and instead of revealing a wonderful sunlit morning there
was nothing but a massive vortex, swirling in colors no mortal could imagine. She
didn’t like having to rely on the magical world’s travel systems. Pixies could
never keep everything running at all times, their gremlin brethren liked
breaking things too much.
She took
one last look at the garage, longingly seeing the couch through the open door,
before lifting off and flying into nothingness.
It took her
only a few minutes to locate the crying girl, sitting in her cupboard of a
room, she was left without even proper clothes to wear. And judging by her arms
she had not eaten in several days, the bones could be seen in the most gruesome
of ways.
The Fairy Godmother
felt disgust rise within her and she quickly phased through the solid oak
doorways to find the step-family. The daughters were the easiest to find, their
loud, shrill voices being heard throughout the mansion of a house.
There were
three in total, each in their own suite of rooms, she assumed the mother kept
the bottom floor for herself. To her horror the three sisters were picking
through the locked-away-girl's laptop, posting pictures on social media channels.
She decided
that getting rid of them as far away from the house as possible would be best
and with a flick of her hand sent a message to all three. It would be something
generic, from a guy they all admired, “Come meet me at this club” or even “I
have a crush on you, come with me on a date”.
She rarely
had to try very hard to convince these types to leave their mansions, going out
into the world where she could get rid of them without ruining the house. Normally
she would take care of these kinds of sisters on her own, but she had become a
bit more lazy lately.
There was a
moment she considered asking Death if he needed some new servants but she felt
like these three had somehow been worse than past sisters. Instead, she sent a
message to Pestilence, she always enjoyed having new test subjects. She would
also get rid of them without any mortal questioning it.
She hung
around the mansion, looking through the forgotten pictures in the attic,
seeing that the girl had a younger sister that was somehow missing. There was
something there to investigate, but her thoughts were interrupted by the sound
of three cars all leaving at reckless speeds.
With a sigh
she went back down, finding the mother where she expected to find her, banging
on the girl's doorway.
“You must
clean the bathrooms, sweep the garden, and come massage my feet! If you do not
come out, I will use Sally again!”
A whimper
of understanding came from the door and the Fairy Godmother saw the most
revolting expression of pleasure across the mother’s face. Clearly she knew
what she was doing and felt joy from driving fear into the girl’s heart, and who
was this Sally?
Following
the mother through the empty house the Fairy Godmother was shocked to see no
servants. Instead she found tell-tale signs of only one person cleaning such a
large space, over and over again.
Eventually, the mother went to her bedroom and there hanging on the back of the door was a
whip with the words Sally scribed on the handle. The Fairy Godmother felt her
rage bubbling into hatred and she knew what she had to do.
With a
swipe of her hand the curtains closed and the door swung shut with a loud bang
that she knew shook the entire house. The mother turned on her heel, and
without so much as a look of surprise began yelling at the girl, still in her locked
cupboard.
The Fairy
Godmother took off her first tool and clamped the mother’s mouth shut, giving
sweet silence to the house. She had no desire to mete out punishment and from experience
she knew she need not have to.
Instead,
she paralyzed the mother and let her fall face first, a satisfying crack of the
nose revealed that her nose had broken. She flicked her hand and a list of
contacts appeared before her, there was only one entity that would do a proper
job of this.
As usual, he
appeared behind her, Truth was an entity unable to lie and never seemed to mind doing the
dirty work of others. He knew the truth of everything and understood where he
was needed, and why others would not do what he did.
“It must be
bad for you to contact me, Pestilence was just mocking me for never working
with you.”
She nodded
in approval, Pestilence had not wasted any time, “Do what you want with her,
make sure she’s found right here. I must take care of the girl.”
Truth
stared at her for a second then simply nodded, before she left the room, she
cast a simple silencing spell. No one would need to know what happened in there,
the Truth doesn’t always need to be revealed.
She drifted
down to the girl, who was trying her best to pull the doors open, but the lock
had been bent. Tears were rolling down her face as could only be done through
fear and frustration. The Fairy Godmother touched her on the cheek and caught
her as she fell, making sure to clean her with magic as she did so.
She would
make sure that the girl would be out of this house and seen by many mortals for
the last several hours and the next few as well. Only waking in a haze at her
only friend’s house, magic was oh so convenient to building a full alibi.
Just as the
Fairy Godmother was satisfied with how the friend was treating her and the will
arrived at the right solicitor's house another message popped up.
Another
girl needed her, a newborn in the East. A triumvirate of gifts had to be given
and two other Fairies would be there to fulfill the needs. When she arrived a
gift of healthy life and a gift of intelligence had already been bestowed upon
her, the other two fairies having left quite quickly.
The Fairy
Godmother did as she always did and waited a few hours to see if anything Maleficent
would happen. She had learned to wait, though her presence alone usually
deterred anything of the kind from happening.
It was with
slight annoyance that she felt the presence of one of the dark beings appearing
in the hospital and then quickly going away again. Clearly, they had not sensed her
presence, it could be because she was busy playing on a console owned by one of
the children asleep in the ward.
She sighed,
saved her game, and made her way to the baby, where she found with further
annoyance that the Maleficent had cast a curse. The curse of mundane life with an arranged
marriage, one of their modern favourites to cast on children with opportunities
and gifts.
The curse
was one of the easiest to break but would need a proper counter spell, she had long
since stopped with the simpler ones of princes saving them. Those never worked
out, princes were boring and always demanded the worst from their princesses.
Instead,
she cast the gift of Maleficent death, one she had made herself with some help
from Death himself. The gift meant that if the original curse came to fruition the
Maleficent that cast it would instantly die, something they all seemed to
believe was impossible simply because they lived in the world of the fae.
Drifting
back to the console, she wanted to catch them all, she felt the presence of the
Maleficent return. They always knew when their curses had been tampered with,
it took it a moment of silence and then she felt its rage more than anything.
She had cursed it with a lifetime of servitude, to make sure the girl would not
have an arranged marriage or that her eventual husband would not mistreat her.
She quickly
took a look at the message system and was pleased to find other creatures of
the fae had taken care of the minor demands being made. Her day was nearly over
when she felt the presence of the Fairy Godfather in the hospital.
He came
sauntering into the room and wore a beaming smile as he looked at her, “Ah!
Sister, I heard from Truth you were busy today! What is that?”
He had
walked over to her and was now staring at the console in her hands, “I do not
know, but it’s quite fun.”
She tilted
the screen towards him and he looked on in fascination, “That is something, I shall
grab us some before heading home tonight. I need your assistance, your girl has
a crush on one of my guys!”
For a
moment she thought he meant the baby before she remembered the girl she had
saved earlier that day. “What? I did not sense you anywhere near her.”
“I was busy
with him, ‘someone’ had given some wench the thought she had to meet with
him in a secluded wood. She had tagged him on Twitter and Instagram, causing quite
the fuss.”
The Fairy
Godmother felt her face flush, “Well, I needed to get rid of them somehow and
Pestilence was meant to stop the messages.”
He laughed,
nearly waking the sleeping children, “Well, how about this, he was gifted a
life of love and luxury. Yours had no gifts, but has plenty now, why not let me
guide them! I have not had a reason to leave in a century.”
She
pondered it for several minutes, even allowing her favourite little monster to
escape. If he took over the relations, she could wake up slightly later, only
having to overlook from afar.
“Fine, you
may do so but if I am called on by her again I will not withhold my ‘gifts’
from even a child of yours.”
She saw his
smile falter for only a second before he regained his usual optimism, “Brilliant,
I shall have one of the minor fairies send you daily updates as well. Though, I
shall be sending a trauma fairy to help your girl. Truth, uh, forgot to have
someone else find the mother.”
What had
been mild annoyance turned into a migraine, “So he just let her find her? That
idiot. Fine, send one, she shall need it anyway.”
The Fairy
Godfather shook his head with enthusiasm, she had stopped playing the game and
they were now floating upwards through the floors. “Sister, may I ask what made
you decide to turn away from sunshine and daisies?”
She nodded along
to his question, “It’s quite simple my brother, I got tired of helping and
seeing my chosen suffer endlessly. They are too nice you see, they do not know
how to mete out revenge and vengeance.”
This time
his smile turned from joyful to cold, “Ah, yes, I see you understand now the
advice I gave you centuries ago. The evil of both worlds only uses the nice to suffer
more.”
She nodded
along, “Indeed, so I have the entities take care of the problem, they seem not
to care. Now, I would like to return home, I shall see you later big brother.” There
was no waiting, she simply sped off and twisted in the air, being sucked into a
vortex.
Her house
was just as she left it, but the sun had already set, and there was food in her kitchen
and a package from her brother already on her living room table.
All in all,
it was just another day in the life of the Fairy Godmother.
